Kate Nash - Foundations

Image

The females costumes throughout the music video are quite bright with her wearing colours such as yellow, orange and green however the males costumes are quite dull in comparison with him wearing tops that are dark greys. This puts emphasis on the woman who is the artist of the video. The lighting of the video is quite bright which in keeps with the Pop elements of the genre, the use of back lighting has been used on the hands to emphasise the importance of the lyrics and what they mean.

Mid-shots are used throughout the music video in order to put focus on the artist whilst she in on the stairs as well as putting focus on what she is wearing and her surroundings in order for the audience to gain a sense of the song. High-angle shots have been used showing the two characters lying in bed to emphasise the lyrics of the song and also when the artist is lying on the sofa so the audience focuses on her facial expressions.

An extreme close up has been used to emphasise the importance of the two hands falling apart from each other as they represents the lyrics in the song. A handheld camera has been used at the very end of the music video, in comparison to the fixed camera throughout, in order to put highlight the words on the poster: “Don’t fall for this” indicating the relationship which the artist has just been singing about.

The artist is usually in the centre of the frame making her the focus point for the audience as she is the artist of the video.

Editing
Straight cuts are used repeatedly throughout the video, creating verisimilitude for the audience as well as keeping the continuity. The fast pacing of the song works well with the cuts as it shows the actors emotions to their feet under the table in keeping with the meaning behind the lyrics, it also makes it clear for the audience what the lyrics can be interpreted to mean.

Target Audience
The target audience of the song are young people such as teenagers and young adults, mainly females. Due to the upbeat tones to the music and bright, female, colours of the artists outfits.

Mode of Address
The use of eye-catching bright colours for the artists’ clothes and the pink of the flowers/cake add to the elements of the artist being a female and the artist aiming her music at females. Although the song is quite upbeat it does contain a serious tone to it about relationships which is displayed to the audience in the characters little actions such as releasing hands and moving their feet away from each others. The audience are spoken to with by the artist looking directly into the camera as though they are the person she is addressing the song to.

Narrative
There is no clear narrative as the song starts halfway through a relationship breaking apart, therefore Todorov and Propp’s theories do not apply.

Representation
The main representation of the video is women. The costumes are quite modest in comparison to how other women in different genres of music are portrayed however the camera angles that have been used such as a high angle shot of the artist on the stairs create a negative representation of women by suggesting that the audience is looking down on her, therefore they are more superior.

Enigma
An enigma is created by the use of song lyrics and subtle actions of the actors in the music video as the audience are unaware as to why these two people are breaking apart. This creates an interesting and attention grabbing video for the song, as the audience would want to know whether the artist leaves her boyfriend or stays with him. However this may create the idea to some audiences that the video is more interesting than the song itself.

Attract Audience:
The elements that attract the audience are the artists connecting the viewer by looking directly into the camera, the bright tones created by the lighting, setting and costume and the use of stop-motion work of the toothbrushes, socks and watches.

Images of Band/Artist
The bright colours suggest that this artist is going to produce catchy songs for future, potential audiences however the camera angles that have been used portray a confused representation of the singer.
